On December 24th, 2018, Pettit Professor Jonathan L. Sessler at the University of Texas at Austin, member of European Academy of Science, visited our College of Chemistry and Material Science. Professor Sessler is one of the leading scientists in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and porphyrin chemistry. He has published more than 700 papers. Among these papers, there are more than 140 JACS, more than 30 Angew Chem, and roughly 10 Science/Nature/Nature Chem papers, plus 75 US patents. His H-index is 100 and citations by others are more than 33,000. Amazingly, Pharmacyclics, the company established by him and the other cofounder, was sold to AbbVie with 21 billion dollars in 2015.

Hosted by Professor Zhang Zhan, Professor Sessler delivered a lecture tittled Macrocycle-based Adventures in Drug Discovery, Ion-Sensing and Self-Assembly.Faculties and students of College of Chemistry and Material Science and related fields have attended the lecture. Professor Sessler presented his work in the field of expanded porphyrin in a manner of story-telling with a good sense of humor. He not only showed the audience the very frontier of porphyrinoid anti-cancer drug discovery and his recent progress of studies on intriguing aromaticity as well. His way to explain complicated science was very inspiring. The audience generated great interest in his research and discussed afterwards topics such as drug discovery, bio-mechanism of cis-platinum, tumor selectivity of porphyinoids and so on.
